Samarkand is a city in Uzbekistan and is most noted for its position along the Silk Road. Today, the area comprises the Chinese province of Xinjiang.
In general, Samarkand rugs are considered more Chinese-influenced than Central Asian/Middle Eastern.
Rich red coloring, flowers, dragons, and fish are all points of Chinese influence as are Persian and Turkish influences
